PCL1 Salt Lake Bees

Ward, Liriano Homers Not Enough for Bees

July 2, 2018 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Salt Lake Bees News Release

The Salt Lake Bees hit a pair of solo homers, but that was the extent of their offense in a 7-2 loss to the Las Vegas 51s on Sunday night.

Taylor Ward belted a bases empty home run in the first inning, his fifth since joining the team, to give the Bees a 1-0 the lead. Las Vegas took the lead with three runs in the third inning, but Rymer Liriano hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth, his 15th of the season to pull Salt Lake to within one. The 51s put the game away with four runs in the fourth with neither team scoring the rest of the way. The loss was the Bees' sixth in a row, their longest skid of the season, and it drops them into a first place tie with El Paso.

Salt Lake starter Griffin Canning (0-2) took the loss, as he went just four innings and allowed seven runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and three walks. The Bees' bullpen of Connor Lillis-White, Miguel Almonte and Oliver Drake combined to work four scoreless innings. Dustin Ackley led the Bees with three hits, including two doubles, but Salt Lake went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. Jose Miguel Fernandez went hitless in four at-bats to bring his nine game hitting streak to an end.
