Toledo Walleye News Release

Walleye Notes

Two of three gets it done : Toledo picked up wins in two of the three games played this past week. On Thursday, a 45 save performance from Jeff Lerg gave the Walleye a chance to rev up its offense in a 6-2 rout of the Indy Fuel. Friday night saw a similar run of offense against Brampton as Kyle Bonis struck for a pair of goals in a 5-0 win over the Beast. The Walleye couldn't net a week sweep as the Evansville IceMen put Toledo's offense on ice in a 3-1 Walleye loss.

Playoff hockey is coming : Toledo became the first team in the Eastern Conference to punch a ticket to the postseason. It the fourth time in Walleye history that Toledo will be in the Kelly Cup Playoffs and the first time they will be there in back to back seasons.

Sixteen and counting : The 7,630 fans that filled the Huntington Center Saturday night marked the 16th time this season that a standing room was in attendance. That is a new Walleye record for single season sellouts. With only four home games remaining this season and averaging 6,973 the team has a shot to set a new Toledo record for season attendance set last year at 231,847.

Lerg is simply spectacular : A 32 save performance Saturday vs. Brampton secured a record for goaltender Jeff Lerg with his 7th shutout in a Toledo uniform. That broke the old Toledo ECHL mark of six held by David Goverde of the Toledo Storm from 1995-1997. Lerg currently leads all ECHL goalies in save percentage (.930) and ranks second in wins with 26 and third in goals against at 2.06.

A daunting task ahead for the Walleye : The coming week is loaded for the Walleye as they set their sights on a North Division title and trying to secure the Eastern Conference. Tuesday night is a return to Wheeling to take on the Nailers. Toledo is 4-1-0 against the Nailers this year but Wheeling is hot right now with a 7-1-1-1 record in the last ten games. Friday night is the final meeting of the season for Toledo and Fort Wayne with the Walleye owning a record of 0-2-1 in Fort Wayne this year (4-3-1 overall). Saturday night the Cincinnati Cyclones come to Toledo for the first time all season. The two teams have played three times this year (1-2-0 record for Toledo) and have not faced each other since December 31, 2015. Sunday in Brampton puts a lid on the week. Toledo is 8-1-1 against the ECHL's lone Canadian team.

The Kelly Cup and Affiliate night: The lone home game of the week is a packed one featuring a pregame Petr Mrazek Detroit Red Wings bobblehead giveaway to the first 1,500 fans sponsored by 104.7 WIOT, 1370 WSPD, and Fox Sports Radio 1230 WCWA. The ECHL's top trophy the Kelly Cup will be on display Saturday night in the concourse, and following the contest 2,000 fans will walk away with a free bag of chips from Ballreich's!
