Stingrays Extend Affiliation Agreement with NHL's Washington Capitals

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The South Carolina Stingrays and Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League (NHL) announced today that they have extended their affiliation agreement through the 2017-18 season.
"We are excited and honored to be able to continue our affiliation with the Washington Capitals," said Stingrays President Rob Concannon. "They have been a great partner and we look forward to working with and devolving their prospects."
The Stingrays have been affiliated with the Capitals for 10 seasons (2004-12, 2014-16) and the organization has seen many players advance from the Lowcountry to skate in the NHL with Washington, including Capitals goaltenders Braden Holtby and Philipp Grubauer. Holtby represented the Stingrays at the 2009-10 ECHL All-Star Game and Grubauer was named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team while playing for South Carolina in 2011-12.
"We are pleased to announce that we have extended our ECHL affiliation with the South Carolina Stingrays," said Washington Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian MacLellan. "The Stingrays are a first-class organization and we are excited for our top prospects to continue to grow and develop in South Carolina."
South Carolina has dressed three Capitals draft picks this season, including 20-year-old goaltender Vitek Vanecek, selected in the second round, 39th overall, by Washington in 2014. Vanecek is currently second in the ECHL with a 2.04 goals-against average. Nine players who have skated for South Carolina this season attended Washington's Training Camp this past September.
Six players who have skated for the Capitals this season have played in the ECHL. Washington, the NHL's top team with a 51-15-5 record, was the first team to clinch a berth in the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
