Toledo Walleye News Release
Walleye Notes
Extra time wins for the Walleye : Toledo started a busy weekend with a 2-1 shootout win in Wheeling on Friday night. After the Nailers took a 2-0 lead in the shootout, Toledo scored three straight on goals from Shane Berschbach, Kyle Bonis and Tyler Sikura to prevail. On Saturday, defenseman Beau Schmitz deflected a pass from Josh Shalla at 2:15 of overtime to propel the Walleye to another 2-1 win. Evan Rankin notched a pair of goals on Sunday but the Walleye were unable to pick up a weekend sweep in a 4-3 loss to Kalamazoo.
Another record crowd: Saturday night saw another attendance record fall as the Walleye set a new Huntington Center mark with 8,367 fans filling the barn. That broke the old mark of 8,317 set on Opening Night, November 7, 2015. The 15th sellout of the season is also another record for the most sellouts in a single season. Toledo is averaging 6,986 per game, which is second-most in the ECHL.
Home streak comes to a close: Sunday's loss ended the Walleye record for consecutive home wins at 13. Chouinard played in all three games this past weekend for the Walleye and has 25 points (6G, 19A) in 41 games for Toledo this year. The 25-year-old defenseman has skated in seven games this season for the Griffins accruing one goal and two assists.
Closing in on the postseason: Toledo's magic number to clinch a spot in the 2016 Kelly Playoffs has dropped to just 3 heading into play this week meaning they are just three wins or 6 points away from clinching a berth. The Walleye can pick up the North Division crown for a second consecutive season with nine more points.
Three in three again ahead for the Walleye: Toledo embarks on another three games in three days starting Thursday night at Indy. This is the final meeting of the year between the Walleye and the Fuel with Toledo holding a record of 5-0-1. Friday night it's back to the Huntington Center to host the Brampton Beast. Toledo is 7-1-1 against the division rivals this season. On Saturday, Evansville comes to town for the final meeting of four this year. The home team has won the previous three meetings with the Walleye picking up two wins in the season series.
St. Patrick's Weekend with the Walleye: It's that time of the year to go green at the Huntington Center with Green Ice, Green Beer and Green Fanwear for both home games this week. Friday night also features a post-game party with the Walleye players in the Lighthouse Lounge in the club level.
