Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs were dealt a 5-2 loss by the Toledo Walleye on Friday night at the UPMC Health Plan Ice Rink at the Cambria County War Memorial.
The Chiefs' record fell to 8-13-5 with the loss.
In the first ever meeting between the Chiefs and expansion Walleye, Johnstown looked to assert itself with a strong first period. Despite only dressing 14 skaters for the game, the Chiefs stormed out of the gate with 16 shots on net in the opening 20 minutes. But a strong effort by Jordan Pearce in net held the Chiefs at bay. He was matched save-for-save by Kris Mayotte who kept Toledo from scoring in the first.
The second period played out much the same, except Toledo outchanced the Chiefs four to two on the power play and used that to seize control of the game. Dominic Osman opened the scoring with a high-rising wrist shot that beat Mayotte to the blocker side. The power play goal came at 15:57 and was set up by Max Tanguay and Adam Hobson.
Tanguay got in on the scoring act for Toledo at 4:10 of the third to stretch the lead to two. Johnstown quickly responded, though. A yeoman-like effort in front of Toledo's net by Jim McKenzie paid off with his seventh goal of the season 31 seconds after Tanguay's. R.J. Anderson centered a pass off of the right wing, and Connor Shields took a turn trying to chop in home before McKenzie's persistence paid off. Derek Nesbitt re-upped Toledo's two-goal lead at 10:16 with a power play marker, but Johnstown was quick to respond again. David Schulz tapped home his first of the season at 12:49 with Dan Collins and Moises Gutierrez picking up helpers. Johnstown wouldn't get any closer, however, as Tanguay potted his second of the night at 14:15 and Evan Rankin netted an empty netter at 19:38.
Mayotte made 34 saves in taking the loss while the Chiefs power play went 0-for-3 while the penalty kill was 2-for-7.
Mark your calendars! The Chiefs are back on home ice on Saturday, December 26 against the Trenton Devils. The Chiefs will be hosting a youth hockey appreciation night where Johnstown Jets and Johnstown Warriors players can get into the game for free by wearing their jerseys to the game. As a special bonus, hockey parents can get in for just $8 with their kids! Good seats still remain and can be purchased in advance by visiting www.ticketmaster.com or by calling 1-800-745-3000.
