Walleye Force Game 6 with 3-1 Victory
April 13, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - Jordan Pearce made 34 saves while the Walleye power play struck three times to lift the Toledo Walleye (2-3 playoffs) over the Cincinnati Cyclones (3-2 playoffs) by a 3-1 final score in front of 1,803 on Saturday night. The Cyclones lead the best-of-seven series 3-2.
Nearly midway through the opening period Cincinnati forward Josh Birkholz was assessed a two-minute minor penalty for slashing and Toledo took advantage. Cyclones goaltender Michael Houser (L, 20 saves, 3-2 playoffs) stopped a Byron Froese shot from the left point, but the rebound was knocked home by Joey Martin to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Toledo took the one goal edge into the intermission, as neither team was able to find the back of the net in the remainder of the first frame.
At the 12:59 mark of the middle stanza, Toledo again struck with a one-man advantage. Forward Willie Coetzee tapped a pass by a Cincinnati defender from the bottom of the left circle to an open Trevor Parkes in front of the net. Parkes found room to tuck the puck past the leg of Houser. The Cyclones had several opportunities to score late in the second, but Walleye backstop Jordan Pearce (W, 34 saves, 2-0 playoffs) made several amazing saves to keep the score at 2-0 through the first 40 minutes of action.
On their fourth power play, the Walleye scored their third goal of the night. After Mike Pelech was whistled for interference, Travis Novak fired a wrist shot from the slot that sailed past Houser's stick side to extend Toledo's lead to 3-0. In the final minute with the extra skater, Cincinnati's Brian O'Hanley blasted in a goal to spoil Pearce's shutout bid and cap the scoring. Toledo prevailed by the 3-1 final.
