Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters, manager Gary Gaetti and General Manager Chris Jones announced the annual player awards for the Skeeters on Thursday. Catcher Chris Wallace was named the team Most Valuable Player while Derrick Loop was named Pitcher of the Year. Catcher Travis Scott was also honored with the Community Man of the Year award.
Wallace currently ranks in the top five in the Atlantic League in home runs (17) and RBI (82) to lead the Skeeters in both categories en-route to the team MVP award. The backstop hit at a .258 clip for the season while serving as the Skeeters everyday catcher. Additionally, Wallace hit a blistering .285 with runners on base and over the month of July, launched five long balls with 22 RBI, including three-straight games with a double and a home run from July 13-17. His 82 RBI and 17 HR each rank second and third, respectively in the Skeeters single-season records.
Loop shattered Sugar Land's all-time ERA record with a 1.28 ERA on the season to earn the Pitcher of the Year Award. The southpaw beat Gary Majewski's mark of 1.79 by over half a run. Loop had 22-straight scoreless appearances over 23.1 innings from June 23-August 20 and retired 28-straight batters from May 28-June 10. Additionally, Loop went 11.1 innings without allowing a hit over that stretch. His 15 saves led the team and rank fifth in the Atlantic League this season while leading all Sugar Land relievers with 60 strikeouts.
Scott broke the all-time home run record in his third season with the Skeeters, passing Josh Pressley's mark of 28 earlier this year. A standout on and off the field, Scott participated in Skeeter Buddies events throughout the season with children in the nearby community. Scott also assists with the Fort Bend Pets Alive organization to promote and provide the resources, education and programs needed to eliminate the killing of companion animals.
The Skeeters wrap up the 2015 campaign against Camden tomorrow afternoon at the friendly confines of Constellation Field. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m. with gates opening at 4. It is the last chance to see four-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner Rafael Palmeiro. Players will sign autographs on the concourse from 4-4:15 tomorrow as well.
