Walks to Forget in 5-0 Loss

BINGHAMTON, NY - The Binghamton Mets were shut out for the first time this season, 5-0, against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Sunday afternoon at NYSEG Stadium. Chase Huchingson came on in relief in the eighth inning and walked four Fisher Cats, leading to their only five runs of the game. Seth Lugo tossed seven shutout innings, allowing four hits while striking out six in a no-decision.

Matt Boyd shut out the B-Mets over his seven innings, for his second win against Binghamton this year. The B-Mets loaded the bases in the second, before Gilbert Gomez grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Binghamton's only other threat came in the sixth inning, when they get a baserunner to third base with one out. Boyd proceeded to get Dustin Lawley to pop out and David Cooper to fly out, ending the threat.

Lugo retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced. The only frame the Fisher Cats had multiple baserunners against Lugo was the fourth inning, when the righty stranded two. Lugo then set down nine of the next 10 batters faced, working around a leadoff double in the fifth.

Huchingson came in in the eighth and issued back-to-back one out walks. Kevin Nolan followed with a single to left field, driving in a run and breaking the scoreless tie. After getting out number two, Matt Newman singled to right field to drive in the Fisher Cats second run. Huchingson then walked the next two batters, the latter bringing in a run. Julian Hilario relieved Huchingson, making his B-Mets debut, and was greeted by a Christian Lopes single to right field, breaking the game open.

Binghamton had five hits in the first three innings, but never crossed home plate. Boyd worked out of two jams and catcher Jack Murphy threw out two B-Met baserunners attempting to steal second base. Boyd got 14 outs from the final 15 batters he faced.

Danny Barnes came on in relief and set down all six B-Mets faced.

Boyd (3-1) earned the win, despite allowing a season-high seven hits. Chase Huchingson (1-2) was saddled with the loss, allowing all five runs of the game in his 2/3 inning. Lugo earned a no-decision, despite not allowing a run.

The B-Mets (21-16) are off Monday before heading to Harrisburg for the first time this season. Binghamton kicks off a three game series with the Senators Tuesday night at 6:30. Binghamton RHP Rainy Lara (3-1, 2.51) gets the ball against RHP Paolo Espino (0-3, 4.22). POSTGAME NOTES: Binghamton is now 5-3-3 in series this season...Binghamton was shutout for the first time since September 4, 2014 against the Portland Sea Dogs (44 games ago)...Jairo Perez has multiple hits in each of his last three games.
