Clearwater Threshers News Release

The Clearwater Threshers grabbed an early 1-0 lead on Education Day in St. Lucie on Wednesday, but could not hold off the first-place Mets in suffering a 5-2 loss.

Threshers' pitching issued nine walks in the ballgame, and three of the five men who crossed the plate for St. Lucie reached base via the base on balls.

Clearwater (9-34) brought home a run without the aid of a hit in the second inning. Andrew Knapp, Gabriel Lino, and Angelo Mora all reached on consecutive walks, and a wild pitch by Mets starter Domingo Tapia brought home Knapp to make it 1-0.

The Mets (27-19) pulled even against Ethan Stewart in the third. A Dilson Herrera single sandwiched in between two walks loaded the bases with nobody out, and Stewart limited the damage to just a run on T.J. Rivera's sacrifice fly. Stewart then got Jairo Perez to line into a double play to end the inning.

St. Lucie gained the advantage by plating three runs in the fifth. Stewart (2-4) issued a pair of walks to open the frame, and Herrera drove a ground-rule double to center to push a run across and make it 2-1 Mets. Brandon Nimmo then hit a come-backer that deflected off Stewart for a single, bringing home a second run in the inning.

Following a walk to Rivera to load the bases, Lino Martinez entered the game in relief. He got Perez to ground into a double play, but that made it 4-1 Mets as Herrera crossed the plate.

Stewart would be charged with four runs on four hits in four innings of work, while surrendering a season-high seven walks.

The Threshers managed to cut the deficit in the sixth, after Pete Lavin doubled to left with one out. Art Charles knocked him in with a grounder through the right side to pull the Threshers to within two runs.

Herrera would hit his third homer of the year for the Mets off Martinez in the seventh inning, lifting St. Lucie to the 5-2 advantage.

Lavin and Charles accounted for four of the Threshers' five hits, as each collected two.

Clearwater will try to snap a five-game skid on Thursday, as the Threshers battle the Mets for game three of the series at 6:30 p.m.
