LAKELAND, FL (May 21, 2014) - The first two games between the Stone Crabs and Tigers have been rather one sided at Joker Marchant Stadium. In both instances, the winning side has used a big inning to pull away early for the win. On Tuesday night, Bruedlin Suero watched the offense provide five runs in the fourth inning on the way to an 8-0 shutout. Unfortunately for Jeff Ames, he didn't have similar luck on Wednesday, and the Tigers pounced on him in the third to split the series with a 9-4 win.

Bases loaded: the Stone Crabs nemesis through the first 45 games of the season. They needed all the help they could get with Jake Thompson on the hill for the Tigers. A pair of walks and a single by Leonardo Reginatto in the first loaded them up for the heart of the order. After picking up two quick outs, Thompson lost control again and walked Tommy Coyle on five pitches to give the Stone Crabs a 1-0 lead. Justin O'Conner was unable to continue the inning, and flied out to left to retire the side.

The Tigers methodically tied the score in the first following a leadoff double by Chad Wright and a sacrifice bunt by Curt Powell. Jeff McVaney's groundout to short with the infield at normal depth scored Wright, and the Stone Crabs came to bat in the second with another golden opportunity. Two singles by Maxx Tissenbaum and Kes Carter and a walk to Andrew Toles loaded them up for the second straight inning. Reginatto's groundout back to the mound started a 1-2-3 double play before Josh Sale struck out looking to keep the game tied at one.

A solo home run by James Robbins with two outs in the second gave the Tigers a lead they wouldn't relinquish. Ames then got the first out in the third, but the night would quickly turn for him. Wright's single brought up Powell, who smashed a two run homer over the wall in left to make it 4-1. A single by McVaney and a four pitch walk to designated hitter Lance Durham led to a strike out of Connor Harrell for the second out. Ames could not get out of the inning, however, and Austin Green's double scored both runners for a 6-1 lead. Robbins came through again with an RBI double of his own, and Jared Reaves put his stamp on the third with an RBI single to make it 8-1.

Trailing 9-1 in the ninth, the Stone Crabs bats woke up against lefthanded reliever Logan Ehlers. Three straight one out singles by Coyle, O'Conner, and Tissenbaum brought in a run after the final single went through the legs of McVaney in right field. With runners at second and third, Carter brought home his 19th run with a groundout to first that made it 9-3. Toles chased Ehlers from the game and a save situation after an RBI single into center field. But the comeback meant very little, and Sale flied out to end the game after a walk to Reginatto.

NOTES: Ames (1-5) retired the final six hitters he faced in order after the Tigers batted around and sent 10 men to the plate in the thirdthe Stone Crabs only had five base hits through the first eight innings before picking up four in the ninththe Stone Crabs were retired in order in five inningsToles (seven) and O'Conner (five) extended their hitting streaks with their hits in the ninthReginatto, Tissenbaum, and Carter all finished with two hits.
