Clearwater Threshers News Release

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez struggled in his second professional outing, and the Clearwater Threshers suffered a series-opening 10-3 loss to the St. Lucie Mets on Tuesday night.

Roman Quinn led the Threshers offense with a 3-for-5 night at the dish, but Clearwater could not erase an early 5-0 deficit.

St. Lucie (26-19) jumped ahead with three unearned runs off Gonzalez in the first inning. An Art Charles error at first base opened the frame, and a pair of walks loaded the bases. Gonzalez induced a pop out and a ground out from the next two batters, but a pair of singles by Eudy Pens and Cole Frenzel plated three runs.

The Mets put up two more runs off Gonzalez in the third inning to go ahead 5-0. The right-hander, who is working his way back from a shoulder injury, was removed from the game after just 2.1 innings.

Gonzalez (0-1) was touched up for five runs - two earned - on four hits, while issuing five walks.

The Threshers (9-33) broke up the shutout in the fifth.

Brian Pointer singled to center with one out, and with two down Angelo Mora and Quinn each reached on infield singles to load the bases. KC Serna worked a walk to push Pointer across the plate.

Luis Paulino relieved Gonzalez, and held St. Lucie off the board through 4.2 innings while permitting only one hit and a pair of walks.

The Mets got to righty Lee Ridenhour in the eighth inning. A Gilbert Gomez three-run home run capped a five-run inning which saw St. Lucie extend its lead to a comfortable 10-1.

In the ninth, the Threshers managed to draw three walks to load the bases, and with two down Mora served a single to right to bring home two runs and make it 10-3.

The Threshers and Mets will meet for game two of the four-game series on Wednesday morning, with first pitch set for 10:30 a.m.
