Herrera, Mets Defeat Threshers 5-2

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (May 21, 2014) - The St. Lucie Mets woke up early and defeated the Clearwater Threshers 5-2 on Wednesday at Tradition Field.
With first pitch coming at 10:30 a.m. on Education Day, both teams played a little sleepy in the early going, but Dilson Herrera took over for the Mets. The second baseman went 3 for 4 and was a triple shy of the cycle.
Herrera broke a 1-1 tie in the fifth with a ground rule double over the wall in left field that plated Eudy Pina and put the Mets up 2-1.
Brandon Nimmo followed with an RBI single and Jairo Perez forced home a run on a double play to make it 4-1 in the fifth.
Herrera launched his third home run of the season, a solo shot, in the seventh to put the Mets ahead by the final margin of 5-2. He did not come to the plate again with a chance to triple and complete the cycle.
Hunter Carnevale picked up his first win of the year. He gave up one run in two innings of middle relief work. Ryan Fraser pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth. Randy Fontanez pitched a perfect ninth for his sixth save.
Mets starter Domingo Tapia labored through four innings. The Threshers only had one hit off of Tapia, but in the second inning he walked the bases loaded and threw a wild pitch to give Clearwater a 1-0 lead. Tapia struck out five.
T.J. Rivera tied the game in the third. He lifted a sac fly to center field with the bases loaded off of Ethan Stewart to plate a run and tie the game.
Stewart walked seven hitters in just four innings. He gave up four hits and four runs in the loss.
Nimmo went 1 for 2 with an RBI and two walks. He leads the Florida State League with 45 free passes.
The Mets (27-19) have taken the first two games from Clearwater (9-34) in the four-game series. They have won five of their last six games.
The two teams will meet again on Thursday at Tradition Field. It's Dollar Night with $1 beer (5:30-7:30 p.m.), $1 soda and $1 hot dogs. First pitch comes at 6:30 p.m. The gates open at 5:30 p.m.
