Walker Aces RiverHawks' Test
July 27, 2010 - Northern League (NL)
Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
Winnipeg's Ace was just that Tuesday afternoon.
Winnipeg Goldeyes (30-31) starting pitcher Ace Walker pitched a brilliant three-hit complete game Monday afternoon, as the Fish pounded the Rockford RiverHawks (26-33) 7-1 before 2,989 fans at Road Ranger Stadium in Loves Park, Ill.
Walker had a perfect game going into the fifth inning until Rich Austin was able to hit a double off him. The only other blemishes on Walker's line was a solo home run he surrendered to John Wagle in the seventh inning and a single to Evan McArthur in the eighth inning.
Winnipeg's bats were awake early and often for the matinee, as the Goldeyes knocked around four different RiverHawks pitchers for 13 hits in the game.
Second baseman Price Kendall singled in Vince Harrison and Dee Brown to give Winnipeg a 2-0 lead in the second inning. It would stand up to be the game-winning play. The Fish would tack on two more runs in the fourth inning and three more in the eighth.
Juan Diaz led Winnipeg at the plate with a three-for-game. He also scored twice, while Kendall and Harrison both had two RBI.
The victory marks just the second time in five road trips that Winnipeg has opened with a win. The other win was also against Rockford, back on May 28.
The Goldeyes and RiverHawks meet again tomorrow night for the second game of this three-game series, as Winnipeg continues its 10-game road trip. Lefty Jason Mackintosh (0-1, 3.38) will be out for his first win in a Goldeyes uniform against Rockford's Brett Durand (5-5, 5.32).
