Walk off Home Run Sends Owlz to Defeat
July 18, 2015 - Pioneer League (PL)
Northern Colorado Owlz News Release
HELENA- After a thrilling doubleheader the night before that got the Owlz back on the winning track, things seemed to be going in favor of the Owlz in Game 1 of the four game series between the Helena Brewers. Things were going good until the bottom of the ninth inning of play, as the Owlz had a two run lead until Jake Gatewood stepped up to the plate that sent the Brewers to a Game 1 win as the ball soared over the center field wall to walk off the field with 4-3 victory over the Orem Owlz.
Things started out good early for Taylor Ward of the Owlz who sent David Fletcher and Michael Pierson a cross home plate in the first and third inning of play to give the Owlz a 2-0 lead for the first four innings of the night. In the fifth inning the Brewers cut that lead in half as Jose Cuas hit a home run to get the Brewers deficit to a one run game.
But after two scoreless innings Ranyelmy Mendoza hit his seventh home run of the season to put the Owlz back on top by two runs, but that was the final run of the night for the Owlz.
The Owlz as a team out hit the Brewers 8-7. Taylor Ward made some great plays defensively and the Owlz turned another double play on the night, but it wasn't enough as they fell in Game 1.
The same two teams will meet again Sunday, night in Helena with the first pitch schedule for 1:05 MT.
