Clearwater Threshers News Release
Mitch Walding broke the game open with a grand slam in the seventh inning, leading the charge as the Threshers powered past the Jupiter Hammerheads, 11-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on Friday night.
Walding finished with five RBI's as Clearwater (5-4) pounded out 11 runs on 15 hits in the series-opening victory.
Ranfi Casimiro (2-0) turned in another strong outing in the start, holding the Hammerheads scoreless on four hits and a walk. He struck out seven Hammerheads as the Threshers racked up 11 strikeouts in the combined five-hit shutout.
Matt Hockenberry tossed two scoreless in relief of Casimiro, while Joey DeNato tossed a pair of zeros across the final two frames.
Zach Green got the offense going in the second inning. After Walding doubled, Green lined a two-run homer to right field, his second long ball of the season.
Two innings later, Green knocked a single to center, and Malquin Canelo line a two-bagger to left to bring Green around. Herlis Rodriguez chipped in with an RBI single to make it 4-0 Threshers. Kyle Martin and Walding connected for back-to-back doubles in the fifth, extending the advantage to 5-0.
Clearwater put the game out of reach in the seventh inning.
Scott Kingery started the rally with a single to center, and a Cord Sandberg walk along with a one-out single by Martin loaded the bases for Walding.
Facing reliever Jose Adames, Walding pulled a grand slam over the right field wall to open up a 9-0 Clearwater advantage. The home run was Walding's fourth in just nine games, matching his total from 120 games in 2015.
Rodriguez and Sandberg each tacked on RBI singles to cap the scoring.
Walking finished 3-for-5 with five RBI's, while Green knocked three hits of his own, scored twice, and drove in two.
Clearwater will take on Jupiter for game two of the four-game set on Saturday, with first pitch set for 5:30 p.m. Elniery Garcia (1-0) toes the rubber against the Hammerheads' Dillon Peters (0-0).
