Daytona Tortugas News Release
Daytona Beach, FL - Angelo Gumbs went 4-for-4 as the Daytona Tortugas snapped their six-game losing streak, beating the Fort Myers Miracle 6-4 Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Gumbs hit his first career Daytona home run as part of a three-run seventh inning that proved to be the difference.
Gumbs began the scoring in the third innings, when he singled in Jeff Gelalich on a base hit to center field. Tanner English's throw to third base got away, allowing Aristides Aquino to score the second run of the play. Taylor Sparks drove in the third run of the frame with an RBI groundout to third.
Fort Myers would get one back immediately, as Chris Paul got the Miracle on the board in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to left field. The Miracle clawed closer one batter later when Logan Wade stroked a single to left to score Nick Gordon. RHP Tejay Antone would strand two on base, as Daytona kept the 3-2 lead.
That lead would stick all the way to the seventh inning, when Daytona got back on the board with a Gumbs two-run homer to left field, measured at 408 feet. It was Gumbs first homer of the year and gave Daytona their largest lead in eight games. Sparks would tack on his second RBI of the game with a bloop single behind first base.
Fort Myers drew closer with a run in the eighth against LHP Ismael Guillon and another in the ninth against RHP Jake Ehret. But with a runner at third, leading 6-4, and two outs in the ninth, Ehret induced a game winning ground out to third off the bat of Chad Christensen.
Antone (1-0) became the first Tortuga starter to earn a win, allowing two runs and three hits in five innings. Ehret notched his second save, allowing a run in 1 1/3 innings. LHP Keaton Steele (0-1) took the loss in the start, surrendering three runs in five innings.
The Tortugas continue their series with Fort Myers Sunday evening at Radiology Associates Field at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. RHP Jake Paulson (0-1, 4.50 ERA) goes for Daytona, against RHP Felix Jorge (0-1, 3.00). First pitch is scheduled for 5:35 P.M. with the Chili's pre-game show beginning at 5:20 P.M. It will be a broadcast from the stands.
Notes: Saturday was Angelo Gumbs' first 4-hit game since June 15, 2012 and the third of his career...Jonathan Reynoso is hitless in his last 15 at-bats...Taylor Sparks drove in multiple runs for the second time this season.
