Clearwater Threshers News Release

Elniery Garcia hurled 6.2 scoreless innings as the Clearwater Threshers combined on their second-straight shutout victory over the Jupiter Hammerheads, 4-0 at Roger Dean Stadium on Saturday night.

Garcia (2-0) permitted just three hits and two walks while striking out five. The 21-year old has not surrendered a run in his 12 innings of work to start the season.

Mitch Walding launched his second homer in as many days, and his fifth of the year. The 23-year old is already just two short of his career-high of seven home runs, set with the Lakewood Blue Claws in 2014.

The Threshers brought their first run of the day across against Hammerheads starter Dillon Peters (0-1) in the third inning.

Gabriel Lino led off with a single, and Damek Tomscha followed with a liner to left for his first hit in a Threshers uniform.

Two outs later, Carlos Tocci walked to load the bases, and Kyle Martin was hit by a pitch to push home a run. The RBI was Martin's 11th in 10 games with the Threshers.

Up 1-0 in the top of the sixth, Walding jumped on the first pitch he saw from reliever Chris Mazza, pulling a liner over the wall in right to put the Threshers ahead by two.

Garcia allowed just one hit through six shutout innings before Jupiter mounted a threat in the seventh, as Brad Haynal singled and with two out Yuniel Ramirez doubled to put two men in scoring position.

Jesen Therrien entered in relief with the tying run at second. He threw three pitches, and struck out John Norwood swinging to halt the potential rally.

The Threshers doubled up their lead with two more in the ninth.

After Walding walked with one down, a wild pitch moved him to second. Malquin Canelo then lined a double to left to plate Walding, and Lino followed with a two-base hit of his own to extend the lead to 4-0.

Lino finished 2-for-4, while Scott Kingery singled in the fifth to extend his on-base streak to 10 games.

Clearwater will try for the series win on Sunday, with first pitch at 1 p.m. in game three of the four-game set. Tyler Viza (1-0) has the ball against Jupiter's Jeff Brigham (0-0).
