Pensacola Blue Wahoos News Release
The Blue Wahoos jumped out to a 10-2 in the second inning, but had to survive for a 14-13 win over a resilient Mobile BayBears team. Ross Perez delivered a key bases loaded triple in eighth inning to give him six RBI for the game and the Blue Wahoos some needed insurance runs, which proved to be enough for Pensacola to hold off Mobile. Despite losing, the BayBears still clinched the south division's first half title with Mississippi losing Friday night to the Tennessee Smokies.
Perez's six RBI were part of a 3-for-5 game, making him 6-for-12 in the series. Juan Duran capped a five-run second inning with a three-run home run, his ninth of the year. Brodie Greene enjoyed a nice night offensively with a four-hit game in his first start at shortstop since 2012. Rey Navarro and Travis Mattair also enjoyed two-hit games. Mattair added a pair of RBI as well.
Wahoos pitchers struggled to find the strike zone with a season-high 13 walks allowed. Of those, seven belonged to Blue Wahoos starter Robert Stephenson. He labored through 3.0 innings allowing 5 R/ER on four hits with three strikeouts. Mobile starter Bradin Hagens (L, 5-3) was tagged for 10 R/9 ER over just 1.1 innings in suffering his third loss of the season.
Drew Hayes (W, 4-1) earned the win for the Blue Wahoos in relief. He allowed just 1 R/ER over 2.0 innings out of the Blue Wahoos bullpen. Justin Freeman (S, 2) picked up the save despite allowing a pair of runs in the ninth inning.
The win was the first of the series and Pensacola will look to even the series on Saturday night. RHP Mikey O'Brien will start for the Wahoos against BayBears RHP AJ Schugel (3-1, 4.03). First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. from Hank Aaron Stadium.
