State College Spikes News Release

AUBURN, N.Y. - Jim Voyles tossed seven quality innings of one-run ball, and Wadye Ynfante went deep with a solo shot as the State College Spikes defeated the Auburn Doubledays, 3-1, to score a victory on the Fourth of July at Falcon Park.

The Spikes' (7-12) victory stopped the Doubledays' (11-7) nine-game winning streak, which had been the longest in the New York-Penn League.

Voyles (1-1) allowed an Auburn run in the first on a groundout by Jamori Blash, but then yielded nothing on the board the rest of the way. The 6'7" right-hander scattered five hits and struck out six batters on the night. Voyles also recorded two streaks of seven consecutive outs in his longest outing as a professional.

State College jumped out in front in the opening frame on Brady Whalen's RBI double to left-center field. After Auburn tied the game, Ynfante delivered the Spikes' second home run of the season, and his first, with a blast to right field to lead off the fourth inning.

The Spikes added an insurance run in the fifth when Matt Duce doubled, moved to third on Walker Robbins's infield single, and scored on a subsequent error.

Will Changarotty pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief for State College, and Cory Malcom (3) struck out the side in the ninth for his third save in as many opportunities. Malcom yielded just a hit batsman and a runner on an error as he closed the game.

The win also ran the Spikes' franchise record on the Fourth of July to 10-3, and was their first ever against the Doubledays on that particular date. Auburn had taken both prior Independence Day meetings between the two clubs.

The game took two hours, 15 minutes to complete, making it the shortest game of the Spikes' 2018 season.

Thursday, the Spikes will look to keep the momentum going when they face Auburn at 6:30 p.m. at Falcon Park in the second game of a three-game set. Right-hander Michael Baird (0-0), the Cardinals' 2018 23rd-round draft choice out of Southern Illinois, will make his first career start as a professional after three relief appearances for State College.

Baird will be opposed by Auburn left-hander Yonathan Ramirez (1-2).

Following the set in Auburn, the Spikes will head to Western New York for a three-game series with the Batavia Muckdogs (Miami Marlins) before an off day on the NYPL schedule on Tuesday the 10th.

The Spikes are then home for a six-game homestand from Wednesday, July 11 to Monday, July 16, with three games each against the Vermont Lake Monsters (Oakland Athletics) and Tri-City ValleyCats (Houston Astros).
