Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
STATEN ISLAND, NY - Staten Island leftfielder Canaan Smith drove in four runs and Hudson Valley committed three errors leading to four unearned runs, as the Yankees defeated the Renegades 7-3 at Richmond County Bank Ballpark Wednesday night. It was the first contest of a three-game, bi-city series.
The Yankees and Renegades swapped sacrifice flies to begin the scoring. Staten Island got theirs in the second on a flyball to right from catcher Jerry Seitz, while Hudson Valley centerfielder Tanner Dodson lifted a deep drive to left in the third.
Staten Island took the lead for good in the bottom of the third when Smith drilled a two-out, two-run homer to right to give the Yankees a 3-1 lead.
Things stayed that way until the seventh when Staten Island scored four more runs to put the game away; all of which were unearned. A throwing error by Renegades' third baseman Adrian Rondon and a single by Seitz began the inning. With one out, second baseman Eduardo Torrealba grounded a ball to Hudson Valley second baseman Tyler Frank who attempted to make a throw to second and begin a potential double-play. However, the throw was wide of the bag and went into leftfield. A run scored, Seitz went to third, and Torrealba sauntered into second. Three batters later, the bases were loaded with two out when Smith came through again with a two-run single to left to make it 6-1. First baseman Miguel Flames followed with a single to right to bring in the final run of the inning with the Yankees in front 7-1.
Hudson Valley got two runs on a two-run dinger to right by catcher Chris Betts in the ninth to make the final count 7-3. It was Betts' team-leading fourth homerun of the season.
The Yankees had 10 hits in the game as Smith finished 2-4 with a homerun, four RBI and a run scored. Third baseman Andres Chapparro chipped in by going 2-4 with two runs scored as well. Rondon had two doubles for Hudson Valley in the losing effort.
Getting the win for Staten Island was starting pitcher Harold Cortijo (1-0) who allowed an earned run on three hits over five innings with four strikeouts. Starter Paul Campbell (2-1) suffered the loss for Hudson Valley after allowing three earned runs on five hits in five frames. The right-hander also struck out four.
The Renegades ended their season-long seven-game road trip at 4-3.
The series now shifts to Hudson Valley where the Renegades will open a brief two-game homestand against the Staten Island. Both games start at 7:05 and will include a postgame fireworks show. Thursday's game will feature righty Michael Mercado (0-0, 4.50 ERA) on the hill for the Renegades against fellow right-hander Frank German (0-0, 4.50 ERA) of the Yankees.
