Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. - One night after scoring a season-high 15 runs, the Great Falls Voyagers were held to just one as they fell 3-1 Thursday night to the Orem Owlz at Centene Stadium.
Both starting pitchers started well, with both posting three scoreless frames to begin the game. In the fourth, Orem (6-5, 30-19) pushed across the contest's first two runs against Great Falls starter Brian Clark (2-3). The lefty retired the first two in the inning, but after a hit batter and a walk, Quinten Davis made Clark pay as he doubled in both runners to make it 2-0 Owlz.
Great Falls (5-7, 28-22) pulled an unearned run back in the their half of the fourth. Patrick Palmeiro doubled for the Voyagers first extra-base hit of the contest, then came in with two outs after Orem shortstop Wendell Soto made a throwing error to bring home the lone run of the night for Great Falls.
The Owlz pushed the lead back to two in the fifth. Caleb Adams started the frame with a double, then moved to third and scored on consecutive groundouts, with Soto collecting an RBI.
Pitching then took over for the rest of the night on both sides. For Orem, Arjenis Fernandez (7-3) worked through six innings to earn a quality start and grab his league-leading seventh win of the campaign.
The Voyagers stayed within striking distance, as the bullpen kept the Owlz from collecting any hits in their four innings of work. Devon Davis allowed just one walk while working three scoreless, and then Connor Walsh came on to spin a scoreless ninth with a pair of strikeouts.
Great Falls could not get anything going against the Orem bullpen either until the ninth. With one out, Ethan Gross and Tyler Shryock put together back-to-back singles to put the tying runs aboard. However, Jacob Kopra got the final two outs to slam the door and earn his third save, also earning his team a split of the four-game series.
The Voyagers continue their homestand Friday night at Centene Stadium as they welcome the Grand Junction Rockies to town to begin a three-game series. Great Falls will turn to right-hander Zach Thompson (2-2, 3.77), while Grand Junction will counter with fellow righty Javier Palacios (2-4, 6.93). First pitch is set for 7:00 and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
