Great Falls Voyagers News Release
OREM, Utah (August 6, 2015)Â - In their return from the All-Star break, the Great Falls Voyagers were handed their worst loss of the season by the Orem Owlz, who took the opener of a four-game set 12-4 Thursday night at Brent Brown Ballpark.
Orem (5-2, 29-16) wasted no time in jumping out to an early lead, scoring five in the first against Great Falls starter Matt Ball (1-4). Michael Pierson got things rolling for the Owlz, driving in the first with a single. Jared Foster followed with a run-producing single of his own, Brendon Sanger added a two-run double, while the final run came in on an error.
The Voyagers (4-3, 21-22) pulled a run back in the third. Sikes Orvis started the frame with a single, the first knock of the game for the visitors. After a ground ball and a wild pitch moved Orvis to third, the first baseman scored on a Grant Massey bounce out to put Great Falls on the board.
The home team responded by chasing Ball in the bottom of the frame. The righty was greeted by three straight doubles, the last of which scored a pair of runs. Alex Abbott then ended Ball's night by taking him deep to stretch the lead to 9-1.
Once again Great Falls pulled one back in the fourth, as Orvis singled Antonio Rodriguez home, for the Voyagers second and final run of the night against Owlz starter Jaime Barria (2-0).
After Orem answered with a run in the home half of the inning to once again push the lead to eight, the score stayed the same until the sixth. Owlz righty Austin Young loaded the bases with three straight walks for Massey, who singled in his second run of the night. Landon Lassiter then walked to bring another run home, but the visitors could not push any more across and left the bases loaded.
The final two runs for Orem came in the eighth, as they pushed the margin back to eight with runs scoring on a wild pitch and an error, handing the Voyagers their largest defeat of the season.
The Voyagers and Owlz continue their four-game set Friday night at Brent Brown Ballpark. Great Falls will send right-hander Brannon Easterling (3-1, 3.53) to the hill, while Orem will counter with fellow righty Jared Ruxer (0-1, 5.14). First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m., and coverage will begin at 7:00 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
