Volstad Pitches Cubs Past 'Birds

MEMPHIS, TN - Iowa beat Memphis 5-1 Sunday night at AutoZone Park in their third consecutive loss.

The Cubs jumped on Redbirds starter Nick Additon for three runs in the first two innings with a two-run double by Anthony Rizzo in the first and an RBI-single by Alfredo Amezaga in the second. Bryan Anderson's base hit to centerfield plated Jamie Romak for the only 'Birds run on the night. Luis Valbuena doubled in the eighth to extend Iowa's lead 4-1 and Juan Apodaca drove in Brett Jackson with a single to center in the ninth to round out the Cubs' scoring in the game.

Chris Volstad was sharp in his second start for the I-Cubs, tossing seven innings of one-run ball, scattering nine hits while fanning four in the win. Additon allowed three runs on seven hits over four innings while walking four and striking out four, taking his fifth loss for the 'Birds.

Memphis and Iowa wrap up their four-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 p.m. with the I-Cubs going for the sweep. The Redbirds send Brian Broderick to the mound to face southpaw Brooks Raley. It is also the second of six days that the 2011 World Series trophy will be on display on the concourse of AutoZone Park.
