Luke Montz's three-run homer in the eighth helped the New Orleans Zephyrs to a 5-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.
Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Scott Cousins singled to left and Mike Cervenak drew a walk. With two outs, Montz blasted his 10th home run of the season over the left field wall for the 5-2 lead.
Zephyrs starter J.D. Martin retired the first 12 batters he faced, and carried a two-hit shutout into the eighth inning before back-to-back doubles from Anthony Seratelli and Max Ramirez forced Martin from the game. Reliever Chris Hatcher's first pitch was drilled into the right-center field gap by Kurt Mertins, tying the game and dealing Martin a tough-luck no-decision.
The Zephyrs took the lead in the bottom of the third, when Nick Green singled to right and moved to second on a wild pitch. Gil Velazquez hit an RBI single to right field, scoring Green.
Cervenak swatted his first home run of the year in the fourth, doubling the lead to 2-0.
Martin kept Omaha without a baserunner into the fifth, before Clint Robinson blooped a single down the left field line, but Sergio Pedroza fired a strike to second to throw out Robinson attempting to stretch the hit into a double.
David Lough's single beneath the glove of first baseman Gaby Sanchez was the only other Omaha hit until the eighth inning.
Hatcher (1-0) blew the save, but earned his first win in relief after getting the final out of the eighth, giving up one hit and allowing one inherited runner to score.
Francisley Bueno (1-3) took the loss for the Omaha, giving up three runs over two hits and two walks in one inning of relief.
New Orleans and Omaha will conclude the series Monday at 1pm. Right-hander Elih Villanueva will get his first start for the Zephyrs this season, as righty Jake Odorizzi takes the mound for Omaha.
