Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash.- The Everett AquaSox (36-34) took a five-run lead into the ninth inning but the Salem-Keizer (44-26) roared back to overcome the deficit and eventually win the series finale 9-7 in extra innings.
Salem-Keizer put a run on the board in the top of the first when Dan Cook hit a one-out single for the first hit of the game and Drew Biery followed with a RBI-double to give the Volcanoes a 1-0 lead.
The AquaSox answered in the bottom of the third when Anthony Phillips hit a one-out double before Matt Cerione singled to send him to third. Cerione and Phillips both scored when the Volcanoes committed two errors while Cerione was attempting to steal second to give Everett a 2-1 lead.
Everett extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Welington Dotel led off the inning with a home run before Ben Billingsley added a double. Billingsley would come in to score when Blake Trinkler doubled to make the score 4-1.
Already with a three-run lead, the AquaSox continued to hit the ball hard in the bottom of the seventh. Cerione led off with a walk before going to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Mario Martinez singled to send Cerione to third. James Jones followed with a ground out, scoring Cerione, before Dotel smashed his second home run of the game with Martinez on base to extend the lead to 7-1.
That was all the scoring the Frogs would do as the Volcanoes came charging back. The comeback began in the top of the eighth as Salem-Keizer scored a run on a Luke Anders force out which scored Evan Crawford to cut the lead to 7-2.
Chad Cordero was unable to close the door on the Volcanoes in the ninth as they put together a five-run inning - highlighted by an Anders double to clear the bases and knot the game up at 7-7.
Salem-Keizer then put an exclamation mark on the game in the top of the tenth as Ryan Cavan and Ryan Mantle led off the inning with back-to-back home runs to give the Volcanoes the lead for good at 9-7.
The AquaSox will welcome the Vancouver Canadians to town for three games beginning Tuesday night. Andres Esquibel will get the start for the AquaSox. Esquibel will be opposed by Joselito Adames. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
