Helm Hits Game-Winner in 12th as Bears Complete Sweep

YAKIMA, Wash. - Matt Helm delivered two clutch hits for the Bears, including the game-winner in the bottom of the twelfth inning, as Yakima (26-44) topped the Spokane Indians (34-36) 4-3 to complete their first series sweep of the season in front of 3,223 fans at County Stadium Monday night.

With two outs and pinch runner Tyrell Worthington on second base, Helm grounded a two-out, two-strike pitch off Indian reliever Chris Matlock past a diving shortstop to score Worthington and end the game.

Earlier, in the bottom of the fifth, Helm hit a two-run single with two outs to tie the game at 3-3.

The Bears bullpen was near perfect, as Will Harvil, Brian Budrow and Pedro Rodriguez combined for six innings, allowing no runs on four hits, striking out two and walking one.

Rodriguez (2-3) earned the victory, pitching a scoreless twelfth. Matlock (1-6) took the loss, allowing one run in 2 2/3.

Dan Taylor tossed another quality start, allowing just one earned run in six innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Dan Kaczrowski helped spark the Bears offensively, going 3-for-4 with two runs and a stolen base.

With the win Yakima improves its extra-inning record to 5-4 on the season in its final home game of 2009.

Tuesday night the Bears open a three-game series against the Tri-City Dust Devils in Pasco at 7:15. Randy Hamrick (2-3, 4.67 ERA) makes his first start of the season for Yakima against Sheng-An Kuo (4-3, 5.46 ERA) for Tri-City.
