Volcanoes' Cancer Awareness Adds Event
July 30, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes News Release
The Salem-Keizer Volcanoes' annual Cancer Awareness Weekend has expanded to assist Cancer Survivors by adding the opportunity to donate hair. The hair will then be used by outside firms and agencies for wig and hairpieces for cancer survivors who have lost their hair due to the affects of chemotherapy cancer treatment.
This year marks the 10th Anniversary of the Volcanoes' Cancer Awareness event. Started in 2002, by Volcanoes co-owner Lisa Walker, herself a cancer survivor, and her oncologist Dr. Bud Pierce, the event has served as a model for many teams across the nation. Originally started as a single night event to celebrate, honor and recognize cancer survivors, it has expanded significantly over the years and grew into a 3-day weekend event in 2006, and has remained a weekend event each year since with hundreds and hundreds of survivors and their families in attendance over the weekend.
College of Hair Design Careers will be at Volcanoes Stadium on Friday, August 12th (the first night of Cancer Awareness Weekend that runs August 12th through 14th), and will provide free cuts and styling for those wishing to donate hair. A minimum of 7" of additional hair length (before cut and style) needs to be cut in order to be used for wigs and/or hairpieces.
Appointments will begin at 5:15pm, at the Stadium. The first ten donors to schedule their appointment to donate hair will be introduced on the field prior to the game and the Stadium's jumbotron will display before and after photos of the donors. In addition, all donors will receive a Volcanoes' Cancer Awareness Weekend goodie bag. Interested donors need to contact Lisa Walker at lwalker@volcanoesbaseball.com or by calling 503-390-2225 - no later than Monday, August 8th. Lisa, herself, plans to be the first donor for the event !
In celebration of this 10th Anniversary Event, the Volcanoes players and coaches will be wearing new Cancer Awareness Jerseys, provided by Dr. Chuck Petrunin of Hematology Oncology of Salem. In addition, Dr. Bud Pierce has continued his steadfast support of the event by purchasing thousands of game tickets to distribute to cancer survivors and their families.
There will be a spectacular fireworks display after the game on Friday, August 12 and on Saturday, August 13 and a post-game concert featuring Steelhead on Sunday, August 14th. These events are all included, at no additional charge, with the usual Volcanoes game admission as they are sponsored by Dr. Bud Pierce.
Cancer survivors can have their photographs displayed on the Stadium's Jumbotron over the weekend, free of charge, by emailing the photo to: probasebal@aol.com . There will be a gift each night for Cancer Survivors and all Cancer Survivors will be invited on the field, prior to Sunday's game (must arrive by 4:30pm), to meet the Volcanoes players and coaches and participate in pre-game festivities.
For more information on any of these event, contact Jerry Howard, at Volcanoes Stadium, 503-390-2225. Additional tickets for purchase are available online at www.volcanoesbaseball.com or by calling 503-390-2225.
