Starter Dominates As Sox Even 2nd Half Record
July 30, 2011 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Everett AquaSox News Release
EVERETT, Wash. -- The Everett AquaSox (2-2, 18-24) evened their second half record by notching their first home shutout of the season, blanking the Boise Hawks (2-2, 19-23) behind a dominant performance by Sox starter Stephen Kohlscheen, his second straight start that has resulted in a shutout for the Frogs.
Kohlscheen (2-0, 3.12 ERA) went seven innings, his season-high, allowing just two hits and retiring 21 of the 23 batters he faced, including a streak of 17 straight. The seven scoreless innings extended Kohlscheen's scoreless streak to 15 innings.
The Sox offense provided all the offense Kohlscheen would need with a solo home run by shortstop Marcus Littlewood in the bottom of the first inning, his third home run of the season. Hawks starter Yao-Lin Wang (3-2, 2.27 ERA) has given up six home runs this season, second most in the Northwest League.
The Frogs got a second run in the bottom of the fifth inning when designated hitter Luis Rodriguez, who played for the Mariners earlier this season and is rehabbing his injured elbow with Everett for the series, singled in second baseman Patrick Brady who led off the inning with a double off the left field wall that barely missed being the Frogs second home run of evening.
AquaSox reliever Tim Griffin came in and pitched the eighth and ninth innings and retired six of the seven batters he faced to record his team-leading third save of the season. It was the second time Kohlscheen and Griffin have combined to pitch a shutout.
The Sox will look to win their second home series of the season as they send out left-hander Jordan Shipers (0-4, 4.81 ERA) against Hawks right-hander Su-Min Jung (0-1, 4.66 ERA) at 7:05 p.m.
