Portland Beavers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - With the Portland Beavers badly in need of some home cooking in their pursuit of a playoff berth, Ryan Vogelsong had some other things in mind.

Vogelsong, who was optioned down from Pittsburgh prior to the game, tossed six solid innings and went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs at the plate to lead the Nashville Sounds to an 8-3 win over the Beavers Monday night before 5,436 at PGE Park.

Vogelsong (11-7) allowed seven hits and was touched for two earned runs. He walked four, struck out five and had RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings to help his cause.

Ben Howard gave up six runs (five earned) on seven hits to suffer his ninth loss. Howard (5-9) walked two and struck out three for the Beavers, who have lost 11 of their last 13 home games.

Nashville (70-52) tied a season-high by committing four errors, but the Beavers (59-64) were unable to take full advantage, stranding 13 men in the game.

The loss, however, did not change Portland's position in the Pacific Coast League North Division. Both division-leading Edmonton and second-place Salt Lake lost Monday night. The Beavers remain two games behind the Trappers with 21 games left to play.

Dave Doster hit a third-inning three-run home run to break a 1-1 tie and give the Sounds their first lead. J.J. Davis had a pair of hits and blasted his 24th home run of the season to lead off the ninth.

Tomas de la Rosa hit an RBI single in the second to tie the game and added a double and two runs scored for the Sounds.

Bernie Castro was one of four players with two hits for Portland. Castro, who reached base four times, scored two of the Beavers runs and stole a season-high three bases.

Castro led off the bottom of the first with a sharp single up the box. He then stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and trotted home with the game's first run on Jason Bay's sacrifice fly to center.

Castro was causing trouble again in the fifth, as he led off the inning with an infield single and stole his third base of the game. He moved to third on a single by Khalil Greene and brought the Beavers to within 5-2 on a fielder's choice groundout by Jason Bay.

The loss ensured that the Beavers would not have a winning record at PGE Park for the first time in their three seasons. Portland is 23-36 at home this year.

NOTES: Bernie Castro stole second base in the second inning and added his league-leading 48th in the fifth ... Donaldo Mendez was 0-for-4 in the game and has just one hit in his last 34 at-bats ... Boomer, the Beavers mascot, celebrated his birthday during the game ... several mascots made their way to PGE Park to help with the celebration, including the Oregon Duck and the Keebler Elf ... pitcher Ben Howard hit consecutive batters in the fourth inning, including Blake Barthol, who was struck in the helmet by an errant pitch ... Monday's loss pushed the Beavers five games under .500 for the first time this season ... Jason Bay had his streak of 11 straight games with a run scored come to an end in the contest.
