Nashville Sounds News Release
PORTLAND - The Nashville Sounds increased their lead in the Pacific Coast League East Division to a season-high seven games with an 8-3 victory over the Portland Beavers in the opener of a four-game series at PGE Park on Monday evening.
Ryan Vogelsong (11-7) pulled within one win of the PCL lead by picking up the victory in his first start since rejoining the Sounds from Pittsburgh. The right-hander allowed three runs over six innings and helped his own cause with a pair of RBI singles.
Third baseman Dave Doster belted a three-run homer to right in the third inning to lead the Sounds' offense. The longball, which came against Portland starter Ben Howard (5-9), was the infielder's seventh of the season and second in his last three games.
With the victory, Nashville (70-52) was able to pick up a game on second-place New Orleans, which lost 7-3 against Tucson earlier in the evening.
Portland opened the night's scoring in the bottom of the first inning. Bernie Castro led off the frame with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a Vogelsong wild pitch, and scored on a Jason Bay sacrifice fly.
The Sounds knotted the contest in the second when Rob Mackowiak doubled with one out, stole third, and came plateward on an infield single by Tomas de la Rosa.
Doster's three-run shot in the third gave the Sounds a 4-1 lead and they extended it to a four-run advantage in the fourth. The first two Nashville batters in the inning, Aaron Holbert and Blake Barthol, were plunked by Howard. Barthol was drilled in the helmet and removed from the contest as a precautionary measure at the end of the inning. Holbert stole third and scored on the first of Vogelsong's two run-producing knocks.
The Beavers plated an unearned run in the fifth courtesy of a pair of Nashville errors and a Khalil Greene sacrifice fly. The Sounds got that run back in the next inning on another Vogelsong RBI single.
John Barnes plated de la Rosa with a sacrifice fly in the eighth to give Nashville a 7-3 advantage before J.J. Davis led off the ninth with his team-leading 24th home run to complete the night's scoring. The slugger finished 2-for-5 on the evening to extend Nashville's longest active hitting streak to eight games.
The teams meet in game two of the four-game set on Tuesday evening at 9:05 p.m. CDT. Right-hander Justin Reid (3-5, 5.58) will start for Nashville and face Portland southpaw Mike Bynum (5-9, 4.58).
