Palm Beach Cardinals News Release
Jupiter, FL - Dan Vogelbach clubbed two early home runs and the Daytona Cubs never looked back, beating the Palm Beach Cardinals 6-2 on Wednesday night at Roger Dean Stadium. The Cubs took three of four games in the set and the two clubs split the season series 4-4.
Vogelbach launched his first home run in his first plate appearance at the start of the second inning. The 250 pound infielder smacked a Kyle Helisek pitch deep over the wall in left-center field to put Daytona on the board 1-0.
The Daytona slugger was at it again in his very next plate appearance in the third. With nobody on and a full count against him, Vogelbach hit a nearly identical, high fly ball to left-center field for his second dinger of the night. The Cubs (19-12, 45-54) tallied a total of four runs off Helisek in the second and Vogelbach's second long ball gave Daytona a 5-0 advantage after three innings.
The Cardinals (22-10, 58-43) didn't light the scoreboard until the seventh inning. David Popkins singled to left field and later raced home on a Greg Miclat double down the right field line to trim Daytona's lead to 5-1.
Billy McKinney led off the top of the eighth with a triple off reliever Corey Baker and scored when Bijan Rademacher drove a sacrifice fly to center field.
Miclat created some offense for the Birds again in the bottom of the ninth inning. After reaching on a single through the left side, Miclat swiped second base and advanced to third on the subsequent throwing error. The shortstop traveled the remaining 90 feet when a Justin Amlung breaking ball got away from him and skidded to the backstop. The run capped the scoring at 6-2.
In his first game with Palm Beach, Miclat went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Luke Voit also chipped in a two-hit night to lead the Cards at the plate.
For the third straight game, Helisek surrendered two home runs and allowed three earned runs. The lefty scattered five hits and was charged with five runs total over four innings. Helisek (5-5) took the loss for the Cardinals.
Baker came in for 3.2 innings in extended relief of Helisek. He allowed one run on three hits, walked one and fanned two. Ronnie Shaban finished the game on the mound with 1.1 scoreless innings.
Rob Zastryzny (2-6) was terrific in the start for Daytona. He gave up three hits over six shutout frames, issued three freebies and fanned three en route to the winning decision.
Amlung earned his first save with three innings to close the game for the Cubs. Five of the nine outs he recorded were via strikeout.
The Cardinals hit the road for a four-game series with the Brevard County Manatees starting on Thursday night. RH Tyrell Jenkins (4-1, 2.32) will start for Palm Beach against RH Damien Magnifico (6-5, 3.77) for Brevard. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
