Yankees Defeat Mets 5-2, Win 3rd Straight

TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (15-15) won their third straight game after defeating the St. Lucie Mets (17-11) 5-2 on Monday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

After a long hour and 50-minute rain delay, the T-Yanks and the Mets began at 8:50 p.m.

St. Lucie jumped out to a 1-0 lead over Tampa in the first. With runners on second and third, Cam Maron hit an RBI sacrifice fly to left field.

Rafael De Paula (6-5) worked out of further trouble in the first and pitched into the sixth. The righty allowed one run on three hits in five and a third innings, walking three while striking out seven.

RHP Domingo Tapia silenced the Yankees until a big fifth inning. Aaron Judge hit a leadoff single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Angelo Gumbs. Tapia bobbled the ball, placing runners at first and second. A walk by Trent Garrison loaded the bases. One out later, Danny Oh hit a line drive over the out-stretched glove of Gilbert Gomez in left-center field, clearing the bases. Cito Culver then plated Oh with a groundout to second, giving Tampa a 4-1 lead.

Tapia (4-7) yielded four runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings of work. The righty walked three and struck out three.

Tampa added its fifth run in the seventh against reliever Julian Hilario. With runners on the corners, Greg Bird reached on an RBI infield single hit deep in the hole at second base.

An RBI triple by Gomez scored the final run of the game for the Mets in the 8th against LHP Ramon Benjamin.

RHP Alex Smith pitched a scoreless ninth, earning his second save of the season for Tampa.

Jose Rosario returned from the disabled list and went 1-for-3 with a run scored, boosting his hit streak to 10 games. Bird went 1-for-2 with an RBI and two walks. Garrison also walked twice, going 1-for-1 with a run scored. RHP Chris Smith needed just seven pitches for a perfect inning and two-thirds of relief.

Up next, the teams square off for game three of the series on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. LHP Conner Kendrick (3-7, 6.24 ERA) will get the start for Tampa as LHP John Lannan (0-2, 7.88 ERA) takes the hill for St. Lucie.
