Tampa Yankees News Release
TAMPA, Fla. - The Tampa Yankees (16-15) secured a series victory by winning the first three games over the St. Lucie Mets (17-12). Greg Bird hit a go-ahead home run in the sixth as the T-Yanks held on to win 3-2 on Tuesday night at George M. Steinbrenner Field. The Tampa has now won four consecutive games.
The Yankees broke a scoreless tie in the third against LHP John Lannan thanks to a few defensive mishaps by the Mets.
Claudio Custodio struck out but reached on a wild pitch to begin the frame. A single by Jose Rosario placed runners on the corners with one out. Cito Culver hit into what appeared to be a 6-4-3 double play. Rosario, though, beat out the throw to second and Custodio scored on the play. Bird then grounded a ball bobbled by first baseman Aderlin Rodriguez. The error allowed Rosario to score, giving Tampa a 2-0 lead.
St. Lucie responded quickly with a run against LHP Conner Kendrick. With one out and the bases loaded, Rodriguez hit an RBI single to left. Kendrick limited any further damage by retiring the next two batters.
Kendrick worked five innings, allowing one run on five hits. The southpaw walked one and struck out four in a no-decision.
The Mets tied the score in the sixth inning against RHP Kyle Haynes. Jared King drew a leadoff walk and advanced on a wild pitch. Cam Maron singled, moving King to third. A wild pitch advanced Maron before a second wild pitch scored the tying run. Haynes escaped the sixth, keeping the game tied at 2-2.
Bird led off the bottom of the sixth and crushed the first pitch he saw from Lannan over the wall in right-center field.
Lannan (0-3) allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits in five and a third innings, walking one while striking out six.
Taylor Garrison relieved Haynes in the seventh and worked two scoreless frames, striking out four. RHP Cesar Vargas earned his second save of the series, and fifth of the season for Tampa, after striking out the side in the ninth.
Jose Rosario went 2-for-4 with a run scored, extending his hit streak to 11 games. Bird drove in a pair of RBI, going 1-for-4 with his sixth home run of the season.
The series concludes on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. RHP Brady Lail (0-0, 7.20 ERA) will make his second start of the season for Tampa. RHP Michael Fulmer (4-8, 4.08 ERA) is scheduled to start for St. Lucie.
