Vipers Take Final Game of Five-Game Set, 7-4

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Kansas City T-Bones came up short tonight in their search for their first .500 road trip of the 2007 season in a 7-4 loss to the Calgary Vipers at Foothills Stadium.

Calgary got out in front quickly off T-Bones starter Kenny Durost when Darryl Brinkley, who led off the game with a double, scored on a throwing error by right fielder Austin Easley who threw home to stop Brinkley from advancing home on a single by Drew Miller.

The Vipers would add six more runs on nine hits in the next four innings off Durost. Two scored in the second inning on a two-RBI single from Manabu Kuramochi, one in the fourth on double from Jason Colson and another in the fifth on a triple by Jorge Tang. All runs would be charged to Durost who picked up the loss having allowed seven earned on 11 hits in six innings of work.

Kansas City was held scoreless by Vipers starter Chris Schutt until the fourth inning when Austin Easley singled home Al Benjamin, who led off the frame with a double. The T-Bones struck for three more in the fifth on four hits, including RBI singles from Calvin Pickering and Neb Brown. Schutt left the game after getting one out in the fifth inning having allowed the four runs on 10 hits to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

Travis Schlichting and Dan Jackson pitched scoreless seventh and eighth innings respectively for the T-Bones. Geoff Freeborn pitched the final three and one-third scoreless innings for Calgary, allowing just one hit on his way to his first save of the season.

Kansas City returns home tomorrow for a five-game set with the Winnipeg Goldeyes. Trevor Caughey will take the mound for Kansas City opposite of Joel Posey for the Goldeyes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Game Notes: Pickering was hit by a pitch in the second inning to extend his on-base streak to 19 games on the road and 22 games overall. He now has at least one RBI in nine of his last 11 games...Rob Watson singled in the fifth inning to extend his hitting streak to 15 games and his on-base streak to 18...Kyle Nichols and Calgary manager Mike Busch were both ejected in the bottom of the seventh inning after arguing a called third strike to Nichols.
