N.L. Players Of The Week

The Northern League announced that Joliet JackHammers outfielder Cory Harris was named Northern League Player of the Week, and Calgary Vipers pitcher Jordy Alexander received the Pitcher of the Week honors for the week ending July 1st, 2007.

Harris, who becomes the third Joliet player to receive the Player of the Week award in 2007, batted .393 (11-for-28) with seven RBI, four home runs, and six runs scored for the week. He was the only player in the league to hit more than two home runs in the week. On the season, the JackHammers' right fielder is batting .305 with 13 doubles, three triples, and six home runs.

Originally drafted by the New York Mets in the 40th round of the 1999 draft, Harris is a career .292 batter over eight seasons. To date, his best season came in '05 when he batted .341 with 40 doubles, 21 home runs and 62 RBI for the Lincoln Saltdogs of the American Association. His big year came the season after playing in for the Greek National Team in the 2004 Summer Olympics.

The 5-10, 190-pound outfielder, has been playing professionally since 1999. In addition to playing for the JackHammers, he has played in the New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles organizations as well as for the St. Paul Saints (Northern League), Lincoln Saltdogs (American Association) and St. Joe Blacksnakes (American Association). With the Saints in 2003, he established the Northern League record hitting streak of 28 consecutive games.

Alexander, who was signed by the Vipers on June 17th following his release from the Edmonton Cracker-Cats two weeks earlier, has had a rebirth since joining Calgary. After going 1-1 with a 7.00 ERA through four starts with Edmonton, the left-hander has gone 2- 1 with a 2.79 ERA and has pitched 15 consecutive scoreless innings in his first three starts for Calgary.

In the week, Alexander pitched eight shutout innings versus the Winnipeg Goldeyes on June 27th, which helped extend the Vipers lead in the North Division first half standings.

Alexander, a native of Burnaby, British Columbia, played for the Canadian National Team in 2005 helping them qualify for the World Baseball Classic. In his 11th year of professional baseball, the former Kansas City Royals' farmhand, he has reached the High A level in the United States and also the top level in Mexico (considered Triple A) with the Cancun Lobstermen in 2004. He has played in numerous independent leagues over his career, having logged time in the Western League, Northeast League, Golden League, Can-Am League, and the Northern League.
