The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (14-12) topped the Austin Spurs (16-9) 119-112 tonight at State Farm Arena.
Houston Rockets assignee Montrezl Harrell led the Vipers with 34 points, 8 rebounds and 2 blocks. Harrell scored 28 of his total points in the second half. Will Cummings added 24 points. Jaron Johnson scored 23 points and shot 5-for-8 from three-point range. He also shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Rockets assignee KJ McDaniels tallied 9 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Raphiael Putney recorded 11 rebounds and 4 blocks, which set him at a total of 70 blocks for the season. Putney passed Damian Saunders (67) for third in the Vipers' All-Time Block list.
Orlando Johnson scored 25 points to lead the Spurs. Deshaun Thomas recorded 23 points, followed by Cady Lalanne added 22 points and 9 rebounds. Youssou Ndoye and Demetri McCamey each scored 10 points.
The Vipers opened the first quarter on am 8-0 run before Nick Johnson scored Austin's first points with a jump shot to put the Spurs on the board 8-2. RGV outscored Austin 32-20 in the first quarter behind RGV's hot three-point shooting. RGV shot 7-16 from three-point range during the first quarter.
Austin fought back in the second quarter to outscore RGV 32-26 and close the Spurs halftime deficit to 58-52. A layup from Lalanne gave Austin its only lead of the game, 36-35, with 6:57 on the clock. Cummings responded with a layup to put RGV back on top 37-37.
Harrell scored 12 of his 34 total points in the third quarter to help the Vipers extend their lead. Thomas made a hook shot to put the Spurs win five points of the Vipers, 72-67, midway through the third quarter. However, RGV held on to control to outscore the Spurs 33-23 in the quarter. The Vipers held a 91-75 at the end of the third quarter.
The score tied twice during the final frame as Austin fought to take the lead. Thomas tied the game at 98 points with 5:50 on the clock. However, Harrell responded with a jump shot to put RGV on top 100-98. Harrell's 16 fourth quarter points helped the Vipers maintain control for the 119-112 win.
The Vipers travel to Oklahoma City to face the Blue Thursday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. (CST). Then, the team returns home Saturday, Jan. 30 for a 7 p.m. game versus the Texas Legends, presented by United Healthcare. The Vipers and KRGV are teaming up once again this season to keep the Valley warm. Fans can bring a gently used coat to the Vipers' Jan. 30 home game at State Farm Arena, and receive one free ticket to the game.
