
Vipers sign former Major Leaguer, continue series with Scorpions

The Calgary Vipers announced today that they have signed pitcher Travis Hughes. The 12-Year veteran has made 24 career Major League Baseball appearances with the Texas Rangers and Washington National organizations. The 6'6", 250 lbs. right-hander was acquired by the Vipers from York of the Independent Atlantic League where Hughes started this season. Last year the Lincoln, Nebraska native played in Japan after having a fabulous season for the Boston Red Sox AAA affiliate Pawtucket in 2007 where he posted a 1.91 earned run average with 24 saves in 57 games.
Tonight, Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT, and tomorrow, Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT, the Vipers' series with the Yuma Scorpions continues. On Saturday is Movie Night at the field as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.
Erik Dessau (4-1) and Joe Sergent (3-3) will start the two games for the Vipers. Dessau is also coming off a victory and his was a complete seven inning game allowing only one earned run while not walking a batter. Sergent on the other hand is coming off his fourth no-decision of the season after allowing two earned runs in six innings while striking out four his last time out. The left-hander is fifth in the league in both strikeouts (47) and earned run average (3.21).
