Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Returning to the road after a season-long 10 game homestand, the Victoria Seals arrived at Telus Field on Friday to take on the Edmonton Capitals. With the home side turning to former Montreal Expo Mike Johnson (0-0) on the hill, the Seals handed the ball to Chris Bodishbaugh (2-0) for his first start of the season.
Opening the scoring in the top of the first inning, Victoria would use three consecutive singles from Josh Arhart, Brian Rios and Carlos Duncan to take an early 2-0 advantage. After a scoreless second frame, the Capitals jumped into the lead when Darryl Brinkley followed up a lead-off single from Marcus Nettles and a walk to Jorge Cortes with a three-run home run to put the home side up 3-2.
With a double from Brett Flowers and an RBI single off the bat of Bret LeVier tying the game for Victoria in the top of the fourth, Edmonton would again take a one-run lead in the bottom of the frame. Another lead-off base hit from Nettles in the inning put the Caps ahead 4-3 on an RBI double from Brinkley.
But Victoria would respond with a rally in the fifth, when Arhart led things off with a single, Brian Rios was hit by a pitch, and Duncan knotted the game at 4-4 with his second hit of the ball game. Then, after Flowers loaded the bases with another base knock, Chris Van Rossum ripped a double down the line off of Capitals reliever Aaron Easton to put the visitors up by two. Despite loading the bases again in the fifth, a strikeout to Jamar Hill ended the frame for the Seals, who led 6-4 into the sixth.
With Bodishbaugh handing the ball to Ethan Katz in the sixth frame, Victoria kept the Capitals to just two base runners until Nettles collected a two-out RBI double in the eighth to bring Edmonton within one. As Victoria turned to Javier Garcia for the save in that same inning, Jorge Cortes picked up the game-tying hit, evening the score at 6-6.
With the game shifting to the ninth still tied up, a single from Chad Ernsberger preceded Aaron Hornostaj's second home run of the season, a walk-off shot, over the left field fence to propel the Capitals to an 8-6 victory.
Javier Garcia surrenders his third consecutive blown save and fourth loss of the season, while closer P.J. Bevis gets credit for the win for Edmonton. Marcus Nettles was spectacular in the winning effort for the Caps, finishing 4-for-5 while Darryl Brinkley was 3-for-5 with 4 RBI's to overshadow a 4-for-5 effort for Victoria's Carlos Duncan.
