Vipers Outslugged Again

Giving up 19 hits the Calgary Vipers were defeated 13-7 by the Edmonton Capitals before 3395 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. After Edmonton went ahead by six runs the Vipers made a game of it in the sixth inning with five tallies to pull within one run but the Capitals responded in the bottom half of the frame with five runs of their own to go back ahead by six. In total Edmonton scored ten runs in the middle three innings with two in the third and three in the fourth as well. With the loss the Snakes drop to 22-14 in the second half and 48-27 overall for the top record in the Golden Baseball League.

At the plate Nelson Castro led the way going four-for-five with two runs batted in to improve his batting average to .410 on the season. Drew Miller also had a solid night going four-for-five as well with two runs scored.

Evan Greusel (6-3) picked up a rare loss in giving up seven runs in four and two-third innings. Trevor Caughey (3-6) took the win after giving up 14 hits and six runs in five and two-third innings. Todd Moser threw a scoreless seventh inning for Calgary out of the bullpen.

Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the first inning as Castro tripled for a league high tenth time and Sergio Pedroza collected a run batted in with a single for a 1-0 lead.

Edmonton responded in the bottom of the second as Jose Morban tripled and both Joe Jiannetti and Matt Ceriani picked up RBI doubles for a 2-1 advantage.

The Capitals added two runs to their lead in the bottom of the fourth frame as Jiannetti walked and Aaron Hornostaj lined a two-run homer for a 4-1 score.

In the home half of the fifth inning Edmonton further added to their lead as Jorge Cortes singled, Kevin House notched a RBI base hit, Darryl Brinkley doubled in a run, and Joey Gomes singled in a third tally for a 7-1 lead.

The Vipers responded in the next half inning as Pedroza and Kit Pellow both singled followed by Wilver Perez who launched a three run shot for his tenth big fly of the season. Miller and Rick Guarno later singled, Raul Gonzalez doubled in a run, and Castro plated a fifth tally with a base hit for a 7-6 game.

Edmonton got all five of those runs back in the bottom of the frame as Mitch Graham and Cortes singled, Brinkley doubled in a run, Gomes singled in two, Jiannetti cashed another with a two-base hit, and Hornostaj knocked in a final tally with a base hit for a 12-6 advantage.

Calgary scratched across a run in the eighth inning as Miller singled, Jorge Mejia reached on an error, and Castro knocked in a run with a single for a 12-7 score.

That run was matched by the Capitals in the bottom half for a 13-7 game as Jiannetti and Graham both walked and Jiannetti scored when Cortes reached on a fielding error.

The 2009 regular season will conclude on Sunday August 30th at 2:00 PM MDT in Edmonton as Erik Dessau (8-5) toes the rubber for the Vipers.

Games 1 & 2 of the North Division Championship Series will also be in Edmonton on Tuesday September 1st and Wednesday September 2nd with both games at 7:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series against the Capitals on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will also be held at Foothills Stadium on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT.
