Armada wins in walk-off fashion, 2-1

August 29, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Long Beach Armada News Release

In front of 1,515 fans Friday night at Blair Field, Jonny Kaplan won it for the Fleet in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off base hit to give Long Beach a 2-1 win over the Victoria Seals. The Armada is now 17-18 in the second half and 37-36 overall.

With two outs in the ninth and the season on the line, Matt Edgecombe started the two-out rally with a base hit. Andy Bouchie followed with a single to right field to put the winning run at second base. Manager Garry Templeton put in Asif Shah to pinch run for Edgecombe before Kaplan stepped to the plate. Facing a 1-1 count, Kaplan ripped a shot to left field to bring in Shah, giving Long Beach the win in walk-off fashion.

The Fleet received a great starting effort from Dusty Gober. Through the first three innings of the scoreless ball game, Gober collected four strikeouts and allowed just one hit.

In the bottom of the 4th, Long Beach scored the first run of the game. Steve Moss led off the inning reaching base on an error by third baseman Brian Rios. Two outs later Jonny Kaplan cashed him in with an RBI triple to give the Fleet a 1-0 lead at the end of four innings.

Gober was flawless through five innings of work, striking out seven Seals, allowing only two hits. But Victoria would fight back in the top of the 6th. Petie Montero led off the inning with a double and two outs later, catcher Josh Arhart doubled to plate Montero, tying the ball game at 1-1.

The Seals threatened again in the top of the 7th. Gabriel Riley tripled and Gober walked Bret Levier to put runners on the corners with one out. Manager Garry Templeton brought in Justin Segal to work out of the jam, and he did just that. With one pitch, Segal induced an inning-ending double play to keep the game at 1-1 at the end of seven innings of play.

Gober finished the ball game with 6.1 IP, 5 H, R, 2 BB and tied a personal best on the year with 9 Ks.

Justin Segal pitched terrifically, going 2.2 innings, surrendering just one hit and striking out one. He picked up his second win of the season in the effort.

Long Beach can still make the playoffs with a little help from St. George. If the Armada wins two of the next three against Victoria and St. George can take three of four in Tucson against the Toros, the Armada would be in the playoffs.

Ben Fox is scheduled to take the hill for the Fleet Saturday night in the second game of the four game series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
