
Vipers Fall 129-125 to Austin in Final Game of the Regular Season

HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (30-20) fell 129-125 to the Austin Toros (19-31) in the final game of the regular season, and clinched fifth place in the NBA D-League Playoff standings.
Houston Rockets assignee Robert Covington led the Vipers with a double-double 27 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Parrom added 26 points. Gary Talton scored a double-double 19 points and 13 assists, and Troy Daniels scored 17 points.
Flip Murray led the Toros with 32 points, followed by Courtney Fells with 28 points. Jonathan Simmons and Myck Kabongo each scored 15 points.
Simmons started the game with an Alley Oop, assisted by Murry to put the Toros up 2-0. Austin led throughout the first quarter. A layup and a shot from the line by Bishop gave the Vipers their first lead, 35-34 with 9:50 remaining in the first half. Gantt followed with two free throws, but Parrom responded with a three-pointer to steal a 38-36 lead for RGV. The score tied three more times before Carldell Johsnon shot a three-pointer that gave Austin a 52-51 lead. At the half, the Toros led 57-55.
Jamelle Hagins gave RGV its largest lead of the game 71-66 with a slam dunk midway through the third quarter. However, Fells connected on a layup to send Austin on a 16-0 run to take back the lead, 82-71. Covington put a stop to the run with a three-pointer. By the end of the third quarter, the Vipers cut their deficit to 90-95.
The score tied six times during the fourth quarter. With 0:27.3 on the clock, the score was tied at 125 points. Woodbury made a layup to put Austin up 127-125. Covington attempted to tie the game with a layup, but was called for an offensive foul. Then, Vipers head coach Nevada Smith received a double-technical call. Simmons made two shots at the line for the Toros to secure the 129-125 win.
