May 31, 2011 - North American League (NAmL)
Calgary Vipers News Release

Behind a great start the Calgary Vipers ended a three game losing streak with a 11-2 victory over the Edmonton Capitals before 3542 fans at Telus Field in Edmonton, Alberta. Manny Ayala (2-0) was great in tossing five and a third scoreless innings giving up only three hits while striking out eight. With a 3-0 lead Calgary broke the game wide open in the seventh inning with seven runs and a home run from an unlikely source. In his first professional at-bat pitcher J.J. Whetsel hammered the first pitch he saw off the top of the scoreboard for a three-run bomb and 9-0 lead.

Also at the plate Kevin Price and Wilver Perez both collected three hits with Price scoring twice and driving in two while Wilver crossed the plate thrice. Jimmy Rohan meanwhile knocked in three runs and Justin Tellam cranked his first home run of the season.

Vipers' pitchers held the Capitals to five hits as Dan Morari threw a hitless inning and a third and closer Claudio Galva recorded a one, two, three ninth inning with a strikeout. For Edmonton Mike Hrynio (0-1) took the loss after he replaced the injured Albie Lopez.

Calgary opened the scoring in the top of the third inning as with two outs Perez walked, stole second base, and scored on a two-strike single from Rohan for a 1-0 lead.

The Vipers strengthened their lead in the fourth when Price reached on a throwing error and Tellam launched his first home run of the season for a 3-0 advantage.

In the seventh inning Calgary added some insurance as Perez and Rohan both doubled for a run, Drew Miller walked, Brian Rios advanced Rohan to third base with a fly ball, Price singled in a run, Tellam walked to load the bases, Bryan Burke knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly, and Whetsel went deep for a three-run shot and a 9-0 lead.

Edmonton got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame when Alex Chavez walked, advanced to second base on a wild pitch, scored on a Enrique Cruz run batted in single, and Tom Collaro had his fly ball lost in the light sky for a RBI double and a 9-2 score.

The Snakes got a run back in the next half inning as Perez singled, Rohan reached on a fielding error, and Price doubled in one for a 10-2 advantage.

Another run was scored in the ninth when Burke, Jonny Kaplan, and Perez all singed to load the bases followed by a Rohan sacrifice fly for a 11-2 score.
