Vipers Drop Magic Number to One

The Calgary Vipers scored a run in the final inning to defeat the Yuma Scorpions 5-4 at Desert Sun Stadium in Yuma, Arizona. After giving up a three-run lead late the Vipers rallied to push across the winning run in their final at-bat. With the win the Vipers sweep the three-game series with the Scorpions and have now won four in a row. The Snakes are now two and a half games up on Edmonton for first place in the Golden Baseball League's North Division and need either one more win in their final four first half games or need a Capitals loss tomorrow afternoon in Victoria to clinch a playoff spot.

Dallas Mahan started the game for the Vipers and went four and a third innings without giving up an earned run and striking out six. At one point from the second inning to the fifth inning Mahan threw 25 consecutive strikes to retire eight batters. Jon Huizinga (1-1) took the win in pitching the final inning and a third while striking out one. Emiliano Fruto (0-2) received the loss in giving up the run in the seventh inning.

The newest Viper Caonabo Cosme led the way at the plate with two runs batted in while he also made the defensive play of the game as in the fifth inning he made a diving stop with two runners on to force one out at second for the finish the inning scoreless. Fehlandt Lentini went two-for-three with a walk and two runs scored.

Calgary scored right away in the first inning as Lentini singled, moved to second base on a throwing error, stole third base, and scored on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead.

Yuma tied the game at 1-1 in the home half of the second as Carlos Arroyo singled, Diover Avila sacrificed bunted him to second base, he reached third on a passed ball, and scored on a Carlos Pupo run batted in groundout.

The Vipers took the lead back in the fourth as Colin Moro and Drew Miller walked, Rick Guarno was hit by a pitch, Cosme plated one when he reached on a fielder's choice, and Buddy Morales knocked in another run on a groundout for a 3-1 advantage.

In the top of the sixth frame Calgary added a run when Moro doubled, Miller walked, and Cosme cashed one with a single for a 4-1 lead.

The Scorpions tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning as Arroyo singled, Diover Avila walked, Cesar del Rio was hit by pitch, Deivis Rivadeneira reached on a fielder's choice for a RBI, and both Adolfo Gomez and Reynaldo Rodriguez plated runs with singles.

Calgary regained the lead right away in the top of the seventh as Lentini walked, took second base on a passed ball, and scored on a Nelson Castro RBI single for a 5-4 final.

This ten-games-in-nine-days road trip concludes against the Orange County Flyers on Monday July 6th, Tuesday July 7th, and Wednesday July 8th with all game starting at 8:05 PM MDT.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Friday July 10th at 7:05 PM MDT when they host the Yuma Scorpions for a three-game series including games on Saturday July 11th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 12th at 1:35 PM MDT. On Friday it will be Mexican Night at the ballpark, on Saturday is Movie Night as Sandlot will be shown on the big screen after the game, and on Sunday it is Bark at the Park and Little League Day where fans can bring their dog to the game and all Little Leaguers get in for free at the Stadium.
