Victoria Seals News Release
Victoria, BC - Wrapping up the first half of the Golden Baseball League season, the Victoria Seals took on the Edmonton Capitals in the finale of a three-game set on Monday afternoon. With Trevor Caughey (1-1) making his second start at Royal Athletic Park this season for the Caps, the Seals countered with Canadian Phil Sobcow (0-0) on the mound.
With both pitchers posting a strong start, the Capitals were able to put a runner in scoring position in each of the first five frames, but watched the Seals open the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. A two-out home run from Matt Kavanaugh, his first of the season, broke the stalemate and gave Victoria a 1-0 lead.
The Seals would then stretch their advantage to three in the sixth when Petie Montero picked up his second hit of the game, and scored on a two-run rocket from Terry Mermer, making his season debut in right field for Victoria.
After Chris Bodishbaugh pitched three scoreless innings in place of Sobcow, Edmonton received a lead-off walk to Joey Gomes, followed by a free pass to Jorge Cortes, and capped off a rally with a three-run home run from Kevin House to knot the game at 3-3 through eight.
The Seals would strike back in the bottom of the frame, though, when Wilver Perez stretched his hit streak to seven games with a single, and Brian Rios cashed the go-ahead run with an RBI base hit two batters later.
With Javier Garcia on to close out the Caps in the ninth inning, Victoria finishes the first half of the 2009 Golden Baseball League season on a high note, and ends Edmonton's chance a first place in the North Division with a 4-3 victory.
Chris Bodishbaugh improves to 2-0 on the year in relief for the Seals, while Derrick DePriest takes his third loss on the year. Brian Rios led the way for Victoria, scooping up the game winning RBI while finishing 2-for-4 on the afternoon.
