
Seals Send Five To All-Star Game

Victoria, BC - The Victoria Seals are proud to announce that five Victoria players have been selected to represent the North Division at the Golden Baseball League All-Star Game - July 14 in St. George, Utah. Catcher Josh Arhart, closer Javier Garcia, pitching ace Isaac Hess, slugger Jamar Hill and offensive second-basemen Wilver Perez will join the top talent in the league for the All-Star festivities at Bruce Hurst Field.
Josh Arhart, who won a league championship with Orange County in 2008, is currently ranked second in Seals batting statistics with a .324 average at home plate this season. The native of Tualatin, Oregon, also has 10 doubles this year, including a club-record three in one game on June 17 in Calgary. Arhart will join Bryan Silverman of the Chico Outlaws behind home plate for the North Division.
Javier Garcia is one of two Victoria pitchers voted to the All-Star team after becoming the first player in the Golden Baseball League to reach 7 saves on the year. Currently sitting with a 4.15 ERA, the San Casimiro, Venezuela product has 19 strikeouts in just 17.1 innings pitched this season, while compiling a 2-2 record.
Isaac Hess will also make an appearance on the mound for the Seals, while remaining as the only pitcher in the league to reach six wins on the season. Now with an impressive 2.56 ERA, Hess sits second in the league with 50 strikeouts against just 224 batters so far in 2009. Bouncing back from hip replacement surgery at the age of 19, the Pheonix, Arizona native has allowed just 18 runs and 40 hits in over 56 innings in a Victoria uniform.
Jamar Hill is set to make his first-ever All-Star appearance after taking the league lead with 12 home runs this season, tying a Golden Baseball League record with four in one game on Thursday night. The Juneau, Alaska product is now first on the team and fifth overall with 36 RBI's on the year, along with a .300 batting average and an impressive .593 slugging percentage.
Wilver Perez earns a trip to the All-Star Game in place of Victoria pitcher Austin Bibens-Dirkx, who recently had his contract sold to the Chicago Cubs. One of five infielders chosen to appear in St.George, Perez leads the Seals in hits, doubles, triples and stolen bases, while also pacing the team with a .354 batting average to date. Hailing from Las Matas de Farfan, Dominican Republic, the Seals' second basemen has committed just three errors all season.
The 2009 Golden Baseball League All-Star Game is Tuesday, July 14 at 6:00 p.m. (PT), while the Annual Home Run Derby is set for 5:00 p.m. (PT) from St. George, Utah.
The Seals wrap up a three-game set and the first half of their season against the Edmonton Capitals this afternoon, a 12:00 p.m. (PT) start time at Royal Athletic Park.
