RoadRunners Clinch Playoff Spot with DH Split

FULLERTON, CALIF - The St. George RoadRunners beat the Orange County Flyers 4-2 in Sunday's double header nightcap to secure the Golden Baseball League's Southern Division First Half title and a spot in the 2009 post-season.

In the clincher, Raymar Diaz (3-0) allowed two runs in six and two-thirds innings and Bartolome Fortunato retired the final four in a row to notch his 10th save.

Ruddy Yan had two RBI on a pair of clutch two-out hits. With two aboard in the second inning, Yan lined a base hit to center plating Eric Pringle. Three innings later, a grounder past third-baseman Julian Benavidez from Yan scored Henry Calderon. A second run scored on the play when an errant throw to second base allowed Ryan Stevenson to come home from third.

Jose Rodriguez homered (7) to lead off the third frame off debuting Flyer starter Manny Ayala (L, 0-1).

The playoff clincher came after the Flyers took Sunday's opener 4-2. Robert Fick's double off Eric Van Slyke in the Flyers' fifth capped off a three-run burst. Matt Durkin received the win holding the RoadRunners to two runs on three hits in five innings. Bryan Harris allowed a double in the seventh, but held off St. George for his eighth save.

Van Slyke (3-4) tossed a complete game in defeat allowing four runs on seven hits. A.J. Valentine blasted a solo homer (10) in the fourth inning.

The RoadRunners lost two out of three in the series, but wrapped up the division crown moving to 25-14 on the season with one game remaining in the first half. OC dropped to 16-16.

St. George has Monday off before continuing their current road trip in Edmonton on Tuesday. First pitch from Telus Field on July 7th is scheduled for 7:05pm MST. David Seccombe vies for his fifth win when he gets the ball in the series opener.
