Vipers Drop Below Chico Outlaws For First Place Lead

Leading by one run in the bottom of the sixth inning the Calgary Vipers committed two errors leading to two unearned runs in dropping a 3-2 game to the Victoria Seals in the back half of a double-header featuring two seven inning games at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. With the loss the Vipers drop to 19-8 on the Golden Baseball League season and fall to two games behind the Chico Outlaws for first place in the North Division.

Daniel Chaffardet (1-1) took the tough loss after giving up the two unearned runs.

Calgary scored in the top of the first inning as Jorge Mejia reached on a fielding error, Brent Metheny singled, and Julio Ramirez doubled in Mejia for a 1-0 lead.

Victoria tied the game at 1-1 in the fifth frame thanks to a solo home run from Josh Arhart.

The Vipers retook the lead at 2-1 in the next half inning as Julio Ramirez doubled and scored on a clutch two-out base hit from Jonny Kaplan who singled on a three-ball and no strike count for the go-ahead run batted in.

The Seals responded in the bottom of the sixth when Colin Moro singled, Brian Rios reached on a pop-up dropped by second baseman Mejia, Arhart walked to load the bases, Matt Kavanaugh drove in a run when he reached on an error by first baseman Matt Edgecombe, and Charlie Strandlund gave his team a 3-2 lead with a RBI single.

The Vipers conclude their season's longest road trip which sees the team play ten games in 11 days in Victoria against the Seals on Wednesday June 23rd and Thursday June 24th with both games starting at 8:00 PM MDT.

The Vipers return home to Calgary and Foothills Stadium on Friday June 25th at 7:05 PM MDT against the Victoria Seals. On Saturday June 26th the two teams will play a double-header starting at 1:35 PM MDT and it will be Kid's Day at the ballpark where the Inflatamaniacs will perform along with Clowns and Magicians.

On Tuesday June 29th and Wednesday June 30th at 7:05 PM MDT the Vipers will host the Edmonton Capitals for a two-game series. After the game on the 30th the Vipers will host a Canada Day Fireworks Spectacular.
