Victoria Seals News Release

Opening up a four game series with a double-header against the Calgary Vipers at Royal Athletic Park, the Victoria Seals began their fifth home series of the year on Tuesday night. Turning to Andrew Arreola (2-3) in the series opener, the home side matched up against Scott Watson (0-0) on the mound for the Vipers.

The Seals struck first in the bottom of the second when singles from Brian Rios and Josh Arhart advanced on a Calgary error before Shane Cronin scored a run with a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Victoria then doubled their lead in the third frame with the help of a base hit from Dale Swinford before Matt Kavanaugh made it a 2-0 ballgame with an RBI double. Padding their advantage in the fourth, another base hit from Rios combined with double off the bat of Arhart handed the Seals a 3-0 lead.

Answering back in the next half-inning, Calgary used a string of base hits from Jonny Kaplan, Caonabo Cosme, and Matt Edgecombe to jump on the board, down 3-1.

The Vipers then rallied to take the lead in the top of the sixth a two-run shot courtesy of Drew Miller evened the score before a single from Kaplan along with walks to Cosme and Luis Taveras loaded the bases to set up RBI base hits from both Guillermo Reyes and Brent Metheny, earning Calgary a 5-3 lead.

Responding with offense of their own in the bottom of the sixth, pulled within one on the back of a Rios solo home run for a 5-4 score. But the Vipers put the game away in the top of the seventh inning as Miller launched his second home run of the game to cement a 6-4 Calgary win in the series opener.

Berek Fasking picked up the victory for Calgary after throwing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen, while P.J. Bevis drew his first loss of the season for the Seals. Drew Miller's 3-for-4, three RBI performance was enough to seal the win for the visitors.

Game two saw the Seals send Anthony Pluta (0-0) to the mound to face off against Calgary left-hander Marcus McKenzie (0-0), making his season debut for the Vipers.

This time around it was Calgary scoring first, jumping onto the board in the top of the first inning when Jorge Mejia reached on a fielding error before Brent Metheny singled and Julio Ramirez doubled in the runner for a 1-0 lead. After three scoreless frames, the Seals evened the game at 1-1 in the fifth with the help of a solo home run from Josh Arhart.

The Vipers re-established their lead, however, in the next half inning as Julio Ramirez doubled and later scored on a base hit from Jonny Kaplan to make it 2-1 Calgary.

Answering right back in the bottom of the sixth, Victoria knotted the game when Colin Moro notched a base hit, Brian Rios reached on an error to Mejia, Arhart walked to load the bases and Matt Kavanaugh drove in a run when he reached on an error by fellow first baseman Matt Edgecombe.

The Seals then took their first and final lead of the contest when local product Charlie Strandlund gave his team a 3-2 lead with a RBI single. That would be all the Seals needed to secure victory, with P.J. Bevis atoning himself with a perfect seventh inning on the mound.

Brandon Villafuerte gets credit for the second win of the year for the Seals, while Daniel Chaffardet takes the loss for the Vipers. A two-RBI outing from Josh Arhart along with some fantastic defence paced the way for the Seals, who claimed their 10th win on the season.
