Calgary Vipers News Release

The Calgary Vipers led 10-1 after five innings but squandered it away and were defeated 12-11 by the Reno Silver Sox at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. Reno scored four runs in the sixth and seventh innings and added three more in the eighth for 11 unanswered tallies and the lead. The loss spoiled a terrific day at the plate for Calgarian Travis Drader who blasted two homeruns for five runs batted in on the night.

Calgary scored in the bottom of the first inning when Jorge Mejia singled, stole second base, and scored on a Drew Miller RBI double. Miller came around to score when Felix Jose reached on a fielding error by first baseman Steven Alexander for the 2-0 lead.

Reno cut the lead in half in the top of the third inning with Steven Alexander singling and Andre Alvarado being hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Following a Ryan Crespi sacrifice bunt, Carlos Madrid knocked in a run with a base hit.

Nelson Castro led off the bottom of the inning with a walk and was doubled home by Darryl Brinkley. Jose scored Brinkley with a base hit and then after stealing second base he scored on a Jorge Tang single for the 5-1 advantage.

Drader smacked his third homerun over the centerfield wall in the bottom of the fourth to increase Calgary's lead to 6-1.

An inning later the Snakes were back at it with a Jose single and walks to both Jose Morban and Patrick Arlis to load the bases. Up came Drader to the plate and he belted his first professional grand slam for the 10-1 lead. For Drader it was homeruns in back-to-back at-bats in back-to-back innings.

The comeback started in the top of the sixth inning as Juan Senreiso hit a homerun to start the scoring. D.J. Dixon walked, Ryan Brown singled and Ross McCoy hit a two run triple and also scored on the play due to a throwing error by second baseman Jorge Mejia to cut the lead down to 10-5.

In the top of the seventh inning Ryan Crespi walked and Carlos Madrid knocked him home with a double. Following a John Hattig single, both Senreiso and Dixon picked up RBI base hits for two more runs. Senreiso later scored on a wild pitch by Vipers' pitcher Jon Huizinga to bring the Silver Sox within one run at 10-9.

Reno took their first lead of the game in the eighth after they loaded the bases due to walks to Andre Alvarado, Madrid, and Brett Flowers. Dixon cleared the bases with a three run double for the 12-10 advantage.

The Snakes grabbed a lone run in the eighth with Miller walking, Brinkley being hit by a pitch, and Jose having his fly ball drop in the outfield for an RBI single.

In the bottom of the ninth inning Calgary put the tying run at second base and the potential winning run at first base but could not score and the game ended 12-11.

Mario Guilin (3-0) picked up the win in keeping the Vipers scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings. The loss went to Huizinga (0-1) after allowing two runs to score in the eighth frame. Eduardo De La Cruz (0-1-3) recorded the save getting the final four outs of the game.

This series concludes Thursday June 26th at 2:35 PM (MDT) with another afternoon "Skip out of Work" special so fans can watch both Jordy Alexander (3-1) on the bump, followed by the Stampeders home opener against the B.C. Lions. The Long Beach Armada then come into town and like the Silver Sox are making their first appearance at Foothills Stadium.
