Calgary Vipers News Release

The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Mike Busch, manager of the Calgary Vipers will lead the 20-man GBL All-Star squad as they take on the United League's All-Stars in a battle of two of the top independent leagues in San Angelo, Texas on July 15th.

"Mike Busch has done an incredible job as a field manager the last four years in Calgary and constantly puts a winner on the field." said GBL Commissioner Kevin Outcalt. "In addition to his outstanding leadership he has a first-class reputation with players, fans, the media, and business partners and I am very pleased that he will be representing the GBL in this inter-league All-Star match-up."

Busch, 39, was a football and baseball star at the University of Iowa. Despite All-American football honours as a tight end and being named Big 8 Male Athlete of the Year he chose a career in professional baseball. Drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 4th round of the 1990 MLB amateur draft, Busch, a third baseman, would make his Major League debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 30, 1995, and appear in his final game on August 10, 1996. He finished his playing career with three standout seasons in the independent minor leagues and then moved into coaching. After two years on the staff of legendary independent league manager and ex-big league skipper, Tim Johnson of the Lincoln Salt Dogs, he was tabbed as the first manager of the expansion Calgary Vipers in the Northern League. In three years with Calgary he has consistently produced winning teams, was named the 2005 North Division All-Star manager and defeated the South in that game, and led the Vipers to the Championship Series last year. This year he has the Vipers in first place in the GBL North Division.

"We are proud of the job that Mike has done for us here in Calgary," said Vipers' President Peter Young. "We are fortunate to have him as our manager and are very pleased he has received this recognition."
